    AARP Social Media Team Seeks Two Amazing College Interns

    AARP’s membership is aged 50+, but we work on issues that matter to all families.

    Be warned: You will not hone your coffee-making skills at AARP (maybe coffee drinking ones.) You’ll be part of a social media team that is entrepreneurial, creative and quirky. We appreciate nerdiness, memes and we inhale media like we’re drinking it out of a fire hose.

    Applicants must have the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, exercise initiative, maintain a positive attitude, and be available to work a minimum of 20 hours a week with our awesome social media team at our office in Chinatown/Penn Quarter. Intern candidates must also meet the following requirements:

    • Actively attending an accredited college/university. 
    • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
    • Provide a recommendation letter from a professor.

    Below are the two specialized roles we are offering for fall:

     

    POSITION #1: SOCIAL MEDIA & BLOG INTERN

     

    Skills You’ll Need:

    • Proficiency in WordPress
    • Comfortable with public speaking
    • Strong editing and writing skills
    • Managing multiple, varying tasks
    • Basic understanding of SEO
    • Deadline driven
    • Organized
    • Monitoring blogs, news outlets, etc.
    • Active and responsible social media profiles

    Because you’ll be:

    • Helping build the next generation of blog.aarp.org
    • Combing blogs, news outlets, think tanks and research groups for story ideas
    • Monitoring social media platforms for potential bloggers, guest bloggers
    • Contributing to the blog on a weekly basis
    • Occasionally editing blog posts
    • Coordinating with the AARP Content Creation team to coordinate blog post assignments
    • Answering questions about and troubleshooting WordPress functionality
    • Aiding in the SEO optimization of blog posts
    • Training individuals and groups of people how to post content of all sorts to WordPress
    • Aiding in the social, paid and earned promotion of blog content
    • Writing posts and engaging with Facebook fans and Twitter followers

    POSITION #2: SOCIAL MEDIA & YOUTUBE CHANNEL INTERN

    Skills You’ll Need:

    • Proficiency in YouTube
    • Comfortable with public speaking
    • Strong editing and writing skills
    • Managing multiple, varying tasks
    • Basic understanding of SEO
    • Deadline driven
    • Organized
    • Monitoring YouTube for hot memes, 50+ channel stars and other fun things
    • Active and responsible social media profiles

    Because you’ll be:

    • Helping launch a new YouTube brand channel and promote online video.
    • Pruning, sorting, and uploading content to the AARP YouTube page
    • Monitoring YouTube for channels containing AARP-appropriate content
    • Training content producers on best practices and using the customized CMS
    • Answering questions about and troubleshooting YouTube functionality
    • Revising, monitoring, and adjusting tags and headlines along best practice SEO guidelines
    • Aiding in the social, paid and earned promotion of YouTube content
    • Helping push the envelope in how we think of uses for YouTube, the Brand channel and content funnels used in specific campaigns
    • Monitoring YouTube metrics for areas of improvement and blogger outreach opportunities
    • Writing posts and engaging with Facebook fans and Twitter followers

    This fall internship will run from August 28 to December 31st 2012 (flexibility if your school’s academic calendar is different.)
